Massa Marittima

Nestled on a panoramic hill at 380 m asl,  Massa Marittima , is 18 kilometers from Follonica. Of Etruscan origin, Massa Marittima is one of the oldest and most fascinating villages in the Grosseto area. Its narrow streets, where it is pleasant to stroll around to discover old shops artisans, go up and down the hill opening up into suggestive open spaces such as the harmonious Piazza Garibaldi, which overlooks the Palazzo del Podestà, the Palazzo Comunale and the marvelous 13th-century Cathedral. fortress with the clock tower, the Romanesque-Gothic church of Sant’Agostino and the Palazzo delle Armi, seat of the Civic Museum.

In the village, ancient medieval customs survive such as the Girifalco crossbow competition which takes place twice a year in May and August.
